Book Review and Giveaway: Make Your Place

Congratulations to Sunnie L, the winner of the book!

Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills is sure to become your go-to reference for all herbal first aid and non-toxic housekeeping concoctions. Author Raleigh Briggs arranged a collection of her zines, illustrations, and beliefs on the importance of DIY in one book to provide readers with a set of skills for making their lives better in an accessible and friendly way all without turning to harsh chemicals and expensive name brand products.

Make Your Place is divided into three convenient sections; health & first aid, non-toxic cleaning & body care, and gardening making it easy to find the exact remedy you are in need of every time you open the book.

Briggs covers home remedies for everything under the sun from burns, rashes, & skin conditions (did you know not to put anything with oil on a burn because it traps heat against your skin?), to homemade spray starch and bleach to garden layout and a seed starting mix.

This book is packed full of useful information accompanied by hand illustrations, safety protocols (natural ≠ edible), and thoughts on what it takes to make a great DIY household. It’s a light and interesting read that would be a great addition to any household, DIY experts and first timers alike.

What are some of our favorite things from the book?

A table of over 20 herbs that assists you in choosing what herbs to add to your formulations for all things skin and hair related (lavender, licorice, and rose are excellent choices in any situation).

For a natural drain cleaner, I pour baking soda down the drain, followed by white vinegar, let it sit for a while. Then I pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain. Voila’, clean drain!

  • Janet Walther

Use 2 microfiber cloths to clean windows. Dampen one cloth and wipe windows and
mirrors then dry with the other cloth.  No lint, streaks, smudges and no chemicals.

To remove berry stains, ones from flower stalks, etc. I heat a pan of water to a rolling boil – take the garment outdoors; spread it on grass and pour hot water on it from a height of about four feet – and the stain comes right out!

  • Jen Manriquez

My favorite way to get stains out of clothing is to dab them generously with white vinegar, then lay them out in the sun with the stain completely getting full sun for several hours. When I wash again, the stain is always gone.

  • Djsgirl_nb

Our favorite use for vinegar – is a weed killer.  Within a couple days, the weeds are ALL gone.

    Thanks for the tips

I LEARNED FROM MY MOTHER IN LAW,THAT IF YOU HAVE A BAD CASE OF ANTS ON YOUR KITCHEN COUNTERS,AND DONT WANT TO USE POISON CHEMICALS,LIKE BUG SPRAY,WIPE COUNTERS WITH VINEGAR AND WATER MIXTURE,AND THEN SET OUT SMALL SAUCERS OF PLAIN VINEGER IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF COUNTERS AND YOU WILL HAVE NO MORE ANTS!!

  • CleverGayle

When I wash sheets and towels, I put in some ammonia.  Ammonia cuts the grease and really gets the linens cleaner and smelling fresher.  No more funky smelling sheets and towels!  I use the cheap stuff, and my preference is lemon-scented, but it really doesn’t matter – just cleaning ammonia.  I use about 3/4 cup for each load.  I also use it every time I wash linens because it’s very humid here in Florida.  But, you may need to only use it once in a while.  It’s a very cheap way to get a lot more life out of your sheets and towels.

  • Akiss50

I use fabric softener sheets to remove static electricity from vertical blinds.  I rub it along the individual slats so they hang freely and don’t cling to each other.

Pine Sol used straight and a brush My husband clothes are almost always covered in oil/grease. I’ve tried everything, the few products that did work would end up costing me a small fortune with all the stains on his clothes. I scrub the pine sol on to the stains. It doesn’t remove all the stains completely but it doesn’t do a bad job. You might have to rewash the load to remove smell completely depending on how much you had to use.

Use Soft Scrub with bleach to get out small spots.  I just dab it on the spot then wash as usual. Works great.

  • Tamendel

I use plain table salt to remove blood stains. Works every time!

  • CavyMom2

I make my own fruit fly traps by taking a disposable plastic cup and filling it about half way with some apple cider vinegar mixed with water and a couple of drops of dishwasher detergent to cut the water tension. Cover the cup with plastic wrap and poke small holes in the wrap with a fork or other sharp object. This trap works like a charm.

  • Toy4pat

If you live near an airport and get a jet fuel film on windows, dip a rag in the window wash you put in your car and you will have the cleanest windows ever, and really cheap.

Denture cleaner tablets work great on stains in toilet  Drop 2-4 tablets and let sit for 1 hour and flush.

use a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar to blast away a  stopped up toilet, works everytime

  • Trisha B.

I clean my hair brushes and combs by soaking them in baking soda and bleach.

  • Len

I just need hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, baking soda, and vinegar. I’ve cleaned nearly every surface in my house today and there was no need to change cleaners, make sure the kids aren’t in them or do more than change out the hot water. I use fresh lemons (on the rind) to scrub toilet seats and bath tubs to make it smell good.

Tea tree oil sometimes makes it into my scrubbing bucket for my own bathroom.

  • Denise G.

A vinegar and baking soda paste is good for cleaning.

  • Diana N

Put 1/4 cup baking soda in your washer – cleans and brightens the clothes, doubles the strenght of bleach and if you have sensitive skin it will help soothe.  Works great on cloth diapers and help sooth diaper rash!

  • Tami

To prevent ants from coming in house I use a layer of cornstarch it sticks to them and they take it back to the nest and it kills them, used coffeegrounds and eggshells deter slugs and snails.

  • Mjreynolds32

If you need to get a blood stain out of a shirt or other clothing item you should spit on it before you wash it.  It sounds kind of gross but the amylase in your own saliva can break down the protein faster and more completely than anything else.  If possible have whoever did the bleeding do the spitting, but anyone’s is better than none.  Also, if you have a really delicate garment that can’t be washed and needs dry cleaning you can remove the odors from it by liberally dousing it in vodka.  The cheapest kind you can find with a high proof will do – it removes odors and doesn’t leave water marks so you can hand the garment inside out and spritz it a few times with a spray bottle and it works wonders.

I like to use baking soda to clean out our dog’s water bowl every day. We have a shih tzu and every bit of dirt and gunk from time spent outdoors ends up stuck in his hairy face, which then ends up in his water bowl when he drinks…very gross!  I sprinkle some baking soda in the bowl with a tiny bit of water, wipe it all around the bowl inside and out, then rinse well with hot water. It leaves the bowl sparkling clean and free of residue.

  • Bobshar

Not only is vinegar good to clean with, it also helps arthritis.  My Grandmother told me to heat up a coffee cup full of water, add a teaspoon of vinegar and a little honey for taste.  Drink this every morning and your arthritis pains will fade away.  I have artritis in my hands and this works wonders for me.

Forget to remove the pen or marker from your dryer and now there are stains? Make a paste of baking soda and vinegar and let it sit in the dryer for one day. The next day use your “elbow grease” by taking a toothbush and scrubbing at the areas coated with the baking soda-vinegar paste.  All or most of the stains should be gone.

my best tip for housecleaning, is socks. When socks start to wear out, or you have only 1 (the dog must have run off with the other), I slip it over my hand, spray it (if you choose) with Pledge or Endust, and dust. You can get to a lot of small spaces, that a rag or feather duster won’t reach. And I am recycling  :)

  • Maintainthe50

I use a paste of baking soda and water that is pretty thick in my kitchen. It takes grease off of about anything and gets my flat top stove sparkling clean. Just remember to rinse.

  • Jodi R.

I was taught how to clean your glass coffee pot (carafe) easily and without any chemicals.  We put about a dozen (give or take) ice cubes into the coffee pot and poured a bunch of salt on them then swished it around and around.  Once the pot was clean (and it doesn’t take too long) just rinse it out and it’s ready.  This way the pot only goes thru the dishwasher once a week!  Saves energy, money and time!

  • Jodi R.

I forgot to say that they taught us this at a restaurant where we had 8-10 coffee pots a night!

I work with the elderly, and a few have forgotten pots cooking on their stove tops. To clean burned on food in a pot, I add about a tbl spoon of cream of tarter and 1/2 cup of vinegar to the pot. Bring to a boil for about 10 minutes. Take off heat, allow to cool, and scrub pot clean. For the burnt food smell in the home, place saucers filled with vinegar around the home overnight. Things should smell better in the morning. Don’t just toss the vinegar away down the drain though, remember to add baking soda to the drain, then pour in the vinegar to keep the drain clean!

  • Lbraendle

If you have those “lovely” white rings on your wood furniture from drinking glasses I have an easy fix. Take a little bit of Miracle Whip and place it on the white ring. Leave for a minute or 2 and wipe off. The ring should be gone. If not try again and leave on a bit longer.

To alleviate coughs-roast lemons until they crack open. Mix their juice with brown sugar and fresh pineapple juice and drink it. The pineapple juice adds its powerful digestive enzymes to those of the lemon to help disintergrate mucus in the throat.

Cut a lemon in half. Use half to put in your microwave. Set it on high for about 1 minute. Then wipe your microwave. It will smell great. But, more importantly it loosens any grime. Put the other half in the garbage disposal. And turn it on with water running. It kills germs and smells great.

I’ve worked In a few public places where coffee was always sold. There were times when the carafes would get coffee build up. Especially If they had set on a warm burner and were almost empty. Once the carafe cooled, we used a mixture of Ice cubes and salt and then shook It around Inside to remove the coffee build up. Worked really well and saved the places money from having to buy new carafes.

My best tip is using aspirin in place of bleach, throw a couple of tablets of aspirin in your washer when washing whites. Doing this you will need to stain treat grass stains, etc. but the aspirin will brighten and whiten your clothes, even those nasty yellow underarm stain areas.

  • Jo

No mates and old socks make great dust/plolishing cloths…just toss them away.  Actually, cut them in half.

  • Stellaferraiuolo

Although it is difficult to find, Clorox sells a “Premium Bleach”. It’s more expensive but, well worth it. I’ve used it on some of my more delicate fabrics that were stained and it worked great. It removed the stain yet, leaves the fabric soft with no bleach-after-effects.

  • StellaFerraiuolo

Oops, sorry, my eyes missed “homemade”. So, I guess I would have to share my secret of -”cleaning the iron with baby wipes”. When my iron gets all nasty, instaed of buying iron cleaners I take a baby wipe and scrub the iron with it. Works great

my best recipe for pretty thourough housecleaning is (minimum one roll) papertowels, one big, full bottle of all purpose spray, and 1 7 yr old. you will be absolutely amazed at the results.

  • Rednecgirl63

As i’m severely allergic to many household cleaning products due to the toxic fumes, i’m very limited as to what I can use for cleaners. To wipe down surfaces I can use any type of wipes as long as they are lemon scented, but can’t use windex to wash windows. I use vinegar to clean my coffee pot then pour it down the drain followed by lots of water. I have to hold my breath while doing this as i’m allergic to the strong smell of the vinegar. For mopping the floors I can only use Dirtex due to the lack of smell.

  • Lisa

I use hydrogen peroxide with lemon oil in a spray bottle as an all purpose disinfectant cleaner.
